After one day of preseason camp for the LSU Tigers, it’s clear LSU quarterback Garrett Nussmeier has plenty of pass catchers at his disposal.
In fact, Coach Brian Kelly says the Tigers have eight SEC-caliber receivers.
“What we’ve told them it’s 1A and 1B and we are going to be rolling guys in and out and I would be less than honest if I didn’t say this is as deep as I ever had,” Kelly said.
And there’s also speed with this group. It’s been reported that LSU has five wide receivers who run faster than 4.4.
One of those guys is Kentucky transfer Barion Brown, who smoked cornerback Ashton Stamps on a deep ball during team drills. A healthy Chris Hilston also caught a long pass from Nussmeier.
The first team receivers were Aaron Anderson, Chris Hilton and Zavion Thomas. The second-team wideout group was Brown, Kyle Parker and Destyn Hill.
Nussmeier’s receivers are not the only ones who have speed.
The Nuss Bus can move faster this season. Kelly said the second-year starter at QB has been clocked running over 21 miles an hour and is expected to rely on his legs more this season.
But Kelly hit on it again, the biggest thing Nussmeier needs to do is eliminate negative plays.
“Zero is okay, we can live with zero, what we can’t live with is catastrophic mistakes and I think you have to live through with that to know what your limits are and so I think he knows what those limits are in terms of managing a bad play and making it zero, I think that’s experience,” Kelly said.
Nussmeier will need a good offensive line to help him limit his mistakes.
The first-team o-line on Wednesday was Tyree Adams at left tackle, DJ Chester at left guard, Virginia Tech transfer Braelin Moore at center, Northwestern transfer Josh Thompson at right guard and red shirt freshman Weston Davis at right tackle.
Chester is the only returning starter, but he started at center last season. Paul Mubenga who made five starts last year, was a second-team guard on the first day of practice. Coen Echols, who saw a lot of playing time in the bowl game victory over Baylor, is another guy pushing for time at guard.
“There’s competitive battles right now on that offensive line, so we have to evaluate them as a group at five and then individually who makes up that best five, so I think you’ll see some of that happen over the next couple of weeks,” Kelly said.
LSU is back on the practice field again on Thursday.
