LSU Coach Brian Kelly said on Tuesday they’ll begin preparations for the season opener against USC on Sunday, September 1st. On Saturday morning, the Tigers had an extremely hot practice to conclude six consecutive days of practice.

It was a good day for starting quarterback Garrett Nussmeier.

“I thought his process was really good today, he stayed with himself, he looked under control in the situations we created for him today, when he does that and his drop in rhythm, he’s really good,” Kelly said. “I thought we saw a good version of him, I think there’s a better version him out there.”

One of Nussmeier’s first passes during the media viewing portion of the practice was to CJ Daniels over the middle. It seems he and Daniels have developed a good connection.

Nussmeier and Kyren Lacy also connected on a touchdown pass in an eleven-on-eleven goal line drill.

Freshman cornerback PJ Woodland had an interception on a pass that Nussmeier was trying to throw away as he was getting pressure from safety Kylin Jackson.

Kelly has been pleased with the development of the corners during camp.

“You want to make sure you eliminate big plays and one of the things we all lived through last year was too many big plays on the defensive side of the ball, we eliminated those big chunk plays and that was job one,” Kelly said.

New LSU graduates

Four LSU Tigers earned their degrees on Friday: Offensive guard Miles Frazier, edge rusher Bradyn Swinson, long snapper Slade Roy and defensive tackle Jacobian Guillory.

Guillory is a fifth-year senior from Alexandria who is one of the leaders on the defense. Kelly admits Guillory was not a very good player when he arrived at LSU in 2022.

“I think his understanding that he needed to be very good at his technique and leverage and last year he figured that out, and because he is so strong and explosive and can play with a great leverage he’s now taking those strengths of his to put himself in the position to be an outstanding football player,”  Kelly said.
