For the third time in five years the LSU football team will finish its season in the Texas Bowl. The Houston Cougars will be the opponent this time as the two schools will meet on Saturday night at 8:15 on December 27th.

Last year, LSU beat Baylor in the Texas Bowl 44-31.

To finish off the season in 2021, LSU lost to Kansas State 42-20 in the Texas Bowl. That was the game the Tigers started wide receiver Jontre Kirklin at quarterback and Brad Davis was the interim head coach as Ed Orgeron was dismissed during the season.

Frank Wilson will serve as the interim head coach for the game against Houston. It remains to be seen who will call plays, as new LSU offensive coordinator Charlie Weis Junior could still be with Ole Miss, who will play Tulane in the College Football playoff on December 20st.

Who are the Houston Cougars? They are 9-3 and 6-3 in the Big 12 to finish fourth. Houston’s best win was a 24-16 victory over Arizona State on October 25th.

Houston was in consideration for the Big 12 championship game, but suffered losses to West Virginia and TCU in November.

Former Texas A&M quarterback Conner Weigman is Houston’s QB. Remember he was the starting quarterback for the Aggies last year when LSU played them in College Station.

Weigman struggled in the first half, A&M went to Marcel Reed and the Aggies stormed back to win 38-23. When you think about it, that was the beginning of the end for Brian Kelly. It started a three-game losing streak and the Tigers were never really the same again.

Houston ranks 66th in total offense, averaging 391 yards of offense, 65th in scoring offense, averaging 28 points per game.

Houston ranks 40th in scoring defense, allowing 22 points per game and 46th in total defense, allowing 348 yards per game.
