LSU freshman Kayshon Boutte sets SEC record in win vs. Ole Miss

With about five and a half minutes to play in Saturday nights games, Max Johnson’s 1-yard touchdown run pulled the Tigers within two.

On the previous play, Kayshon Boutte twisted his ankle.

“I honestly didn’t know that happened,” Johnson said. “He looked good on the field and he made all the catches for us he balled out.”

Boutte was back on the field for LSU’s following drive and caught what proved to be the game winning score, a 45-yard touchdown pass from Johnson.

“It’s a tough game,” Boutte said he told himself before the drive. “I can’t quit now we gotta push through in order to be victorious.”

He said it was a great feeling to notch the game-winning score and it was made even more special as the score gave him an SEC record for receiving yards in a single game.

Boutte finished with 308 yards and three touchdowns on 14 grabs.

“It’s a good feeling knowing that I set an SEC record as young as I am,” Boutte said. “(I’m) 18 years old a freshman, true freshman, knowing I have two more years to progress.”

Boutte said even he was surprised that had such an outstanding game so early in his playing career.

“I didn’t think I’d have this game this year,” he said. “I assumed I’d have it next year. But seeing Ja’Marr (Chase) opt out, it made me step up. And then when Terrace opted out, the goal (I gave) myself was to be wide receiver 1 and throughout the last three weeks, I worked hard to be that.”
