Myles Brennan return: QB won't play in LSU bowl game, and IG hint wasn't really a hint

Myles Brennan has never technically been anywhere else, but the quarterback's decision to return to LSU was nonetheless a major get for new Tigers coach Brian Kelly.

But that doesn't mean the questions at quarterback for LSU's upcoming date in the TaxAct Texas Bowl have gone away. Brennan hasn't played all season, and he knew it wouldn't make sense to try to return for one game, sources confirmed to WWL Radio on Thursday.

Brennan confirmed that decision in an interview on ESPN 104.5's Off The Bench Friday morning, diving more into how his decision to remove his name from the transfer portal played out this week.

"I personally think I have too much ahead of me — I know I have too much ahead of me to risk anything for that one game,” Brennan said.

The quarterback has one year of eligibility remaining, and knew he needed to find an opportunity to get back on the field -- wherever that might be -- to showcase his abilities. His ultimate goal is to reach the NFL, and his best chance of doing that wasn't going to come anywhere without a clear path to the starting job.

That decision came this week, appearing to confirm speculation based off his recent Instragram post that featured Brennan in an LSU jersey.

"A champion is defined by the adversity he overcomes.. I'll be back," Brennan wrote, fueling premature speculation he'd decided to return to the Tigers.

But as WWL Radio reported this week, the conversation around his return didn't begin until Kelly dialed his number on Monday. The reason behind his post, as he told Off The Bench, was much simpler. He was going through and deleting some of the 16,000 photos currently on his camera roll when he found the photo. He liked it, and thought he'd share it. The rumors swirled from there.

“I was like you know what, I’m just going to put this on the Gram not even thinking twice about it," he said. "Sure enough I wake up the next morning and it’s like absolute chaos. Yes, nothing to do with what was to come. So I think that was pretty funny looking back on it.”

Brennan had narrowed down his list of possible transfer destinations to a few schools. LSU was not on that list until the call with Kelly. But after LSU's new coach laid out his philosophies and plans for the offense, Brennan's decision was made quickly. He'll continue getting ready to play, and will rejoin the team in January -- much like a transfer would -- and treat it like a fresh start.

He's back close to 100 percent after the broken arm suffered as he prepared for a fishing trip prior the season, and he indicated his conversations with several players helped solidify their decisions as they aim to put a stamp on LSU's program. It remains unclear who will start in the bowl game, potentially freshman Garrett Nussmeier, thought there are some questions surrounding his redshirt options. But the future is already looking brighter, with the familiar face back in the fold.

After years of waiting and a pair of bizarre injuries, Brennan's turn to lead the LSU Tigers will come after all ... and with a heck of a story to tell afterward, regardless of how it ends.

"We are the guys now," Brennan said on Off The Bench. "We came in together and we have a chance to finish this thing on a really strong note with a new staff, a new philosophy, a new standard, and let’s just go do it."
