LSU is set to wrap up its Spring Football schedule with the National L Club Spring Game Saturday.

Tigers head coach Ed Orgeron said after Tuesday’s practice that he’s expecting Saturday’s scrimmage to be competitive.

“We want to compete,” Orgeron said. “This is another practice. we need this. That’s why we are going first offense vs. first defense and second offense vs. second defense now we’re going to rotate some players.”

LSU’s roster will be split into the Purple and White teams and Orgeron said the White team will be first-team offense and second-team defense while the Purple team will feature defensive starters and the second-team offense.

Orgeron added the Tigers will stick mostly to their core offense and defense as they don’t want to put too much on film for their 2021 season opening opponent UCLA.

“We do want to do enough things to let our players compete and have fun,” he said.

One area the Tigers won’t be able to do as much is in the running game due to multiple injuries at running back.

“We’re very thin at running back right now, we have a lot of running backs hurt,” Orgeron said. “I wish we could have full scrimmage to where we could ave all our backs and we are cranking it up pretty good. We weren’t able to do that at all this Spring so we are going to have to do that more in Fall Camp.”

Orgeron also said not to read too much into which quarterback gets the first snaps in the scrimmage as the competition will last well into the fall camp.

“All of them had a good Spring, but, you know we’re just getting started,” he said. “We’re putting in new offense every day. We can’t judge those guys yet. We got to give them enough reps to where we can get in a game situation have some preseason games and then give them a chance to compete for the starting job.”
