Team hiring next LSU football coach apparently not on same page with governor's contract concerns

Louisiana Governor Jeff Landry expressed deep concern about the way LSU structured Football Coach Brian Kelly's contract.

He voiced his anger with now-former Athletic Director Scott Woodward for allowing the massive buyout in the contract, then Woodward and LSU went separate ways.

However, the people looking for a new LSU football coach don't seem to share the governor's worries.

"Well let me make it clear; the governor had the right to be concerned, and we are working toward solutions," LSU Board of Supervisors Member John Carmouche said Friday.

Carmouch is chairing the Athletic Committee and went on to emphasize, however, that the people of Louisiana are not the ones left with a huge bill to pay when a coach is fired.

"Let me make it clear; the state has never, and the taxpayers have never paid for a coach and never will."

Boosters and athletics funds have ultimately paid coach buyouts over the years.

Interim Athletic Director Verge Ausberry is leading the coach search.  He stressed that he has not been instructed to consider the structure of the next coach's contract.

"I was told to get the best football coach there is and don't worry about that at all," he explained. "We are going to go out there together as a team and get the best contract, get the best coach."

He added that his job is to hire the finest candidate.

"Whatever it takes to get that person here, we will do."
