LSU's campus in Baton Rouge is no stranger to larger-than-life statues to honor Tigers legends, and the next name coming to that list: Tigers, WNBA and Olympic legend Seimone Augustus.
Augustus statue will join the trio of Pete Maravich, Shaquille O'Neal and Bob Pettit outside the Pete Maravich Assembly Center, the first women's athlete in school history to have a statue built in her honor.
“Seimone Augustus is one of the greatest players in the history of our game. She has been successful at every level of basketball and what she did for this program and this university deserves to be recognized," said Tigers women's basketball coach Kim Mulkey in a press release. "I am proud we are able to honor Seimone with a statue where our fans will forever be able to reflect on her impact and greatness.”
Augustus led the LSU women to a record of 121-19 in her time in Baton Rouge, a three-time All-American and recipient of the 2006 NCAA Class Award. Her No. 33 jersey has already been retired and hangs from the rafters of the PMAC, the first women's athlete to have her jersey retired.
Augustus was the No. 1 pick in the 2006 WNBA draft, won four WNBA titles and was named MVP for the 2011 finals. She also helped Team USA win three gold medals at the Olympics (2008, 2012 and 2016) before officially retiring in 2021. She continues in the role of assistant coach with the L.A. Sparks.
