Here's what happened in LSU football's latest scrimmage; updates on injuries, more

LSU football had to adjust its schedule this week due to a series of injuries, most of which are not expected to be serious, coach Ed Orgeron said after the team’s scrimmage on Saturday.

LSU had initially planned to be in pads on Thursday, but with too many players injured they changed course and practiced in helmets and shells, which means less contact during drills.

The team had a walkthrough on Friday before its second camp scrimmage, which Orgeron said showed improvement by several groups.

Some stats from the scrimmage:

- QB Max Johnson: 11-for-19, 125 yards, TD
- QB Garrett Nussmeier: 18-for-32, 3 TDs, INT

Orgeron: "Max is our starting quarterback, you know, but I have no problem if Max goes down and Garrett gets in the game. Now, that doesn't mean that Garrett can't compete for the starting position, but right now I feel good that Max is our starting quarterback and Garrett's behind him. But I think Garrett is going to be one great quarterback."

- RB Josh Williams: 7 carries, 66 yards
- RB Armoni Goodwin: 6 carries, 25 yards
- RB Corey Kiner: 5 carries, 15 yards
DNP: John Emery; Tyrion Davis-Price

Orgeron: "Those young backs look good."

- WR Devonta Lee: 5 catches, 85 yards
- WR Malik Davis: 4 catches
- WR Deion Smith: 3 catches

- DB Jay Ward: 8 tackles
- LB Zavier Carter: 2 sacks
- DL Maason Smith: 3 sacks

- PK Cade York: Good from 54 yards

Orgeron: "Obviously we think [York] is one of the best in the country."

MORE INJURIES

Orgeron has repeatedly stated that outside of Glen Logan's broken foot, none of the injuries Tigers players are currently battling will be expected to keep them out of action. That group already includes star cornerback Derek Stingley Jr., who has been out of action with an injury for over a week and will likely no longer be worked in for WR reps this offseason.

Logan is expected to get back into action at some point during the season, Orgeron said.

The latest player struck by the injury bug is freshman defensive back Sage Ryan. Orgeron didn't specify Ryan's injury, but described it in similar terms to Stingley's so far as its severity. The injury should be fully healed "in a couple weeks," the coach said, but didn't specify when he'd be expected to return to action.

"Both of those young men are going to be fine," Orgeron said. "They're just not ready yet."

WHAT'S NEXT?

After its second scrimmage, LSU football will now begin diving more fully into prep for the opener against UCLA on Sept. 4. The Tigers will begin to install their game plan before holding a "mock game" simulating UCLA on Saturday (Aug. 29).

The team will travel to L.A. the following Thursday before they face the Bruins at the Rose Bowl on Sept. 4.
