Original story:

According to the Charlotte Observer, Newton will meet Thursday with Panthers head coach Matt Rhule, owner David Tepper and vice president of football operations Steven Drummond.

The Panthers will be without starter Sam Darnold for several weeks after he was placed on injured reserve with a shoulder injury, so the need for a quarterback is there. Newton reportedly is vaccinated now, so he could join the Panthers soon.

Joe Person of The Athletic reports a deal between Newton and the Panthers is “close to being done.”

Newton spent his first nine seasons in the NFL with the team and is an iconic figure in the region.

The quarterback has not met with any teams since being released by New England at the end of training camp.
