In perfect tandem with the first cold front of the season, prep football has made its long-awaited return to Louisiana. After months of no activities, followed by months of restricted activities, high school players will finally buckle the chinstrap and participate in an athletic event. As usual, the metro area has several big games on tap for the season opener. That said, due to crowd limitations, most Orleans Parish stadiums will be dark on Friday night.
Two Orleans Parish schools that have opted to play in Jefferson Parish this week in order to accommodate more fans are the Karr Cougars and Warren Easton Eagles. Karr and Warren Easton capped off last year with a thrilling state championship game that Karr won 35-34. The two teams will pick up right where they left off and open the season against each other. Don’t be surprised if these teams end the season playing each other once again for a championship.
Two other local teams that are well acquainted with each other, Chalmette and Holy Cross, will play Friday night at Bobby Nuss Stadium in Chalmette. Holy Cross has several college commits and may be the team to watch in the Catholic League. The Allstate Sugar Bowl Prep Football Roundup will have live updates from this game Friday night.
WWL reporters will also be stationed at other local games throughout the metro area, including John Curtis v. Landry Walker, Brother Martin v. Ponchatoula and Rummel v. Hammond, just to name a few.
John Curtis is looking to climb back up the ladder for a Division 1 championship, and the Patriots begin their quest with a formidable opponent in Landry Walker, led by head coach and former New Orleans Saints cornerback Kennan Lewis. Brother Martin will travel to Ponchatoula to take on Coach Hank Tierney’s Green Wave. The Crusaders will return most of their offensive starters from last year’s team. Finally, the defending Division 1 Champion Rummel Raiders will board the bus to play in Strawberry Stadium against Hammond, with Coach Nick Monica looking to remain undefeated in his high school head coaching career.
Catch live updates from all these games and more Friday night at 7pm on the WWL Allstate Sugar Bowl Prep Football Roundup with Brad Luminais and Allen Waddell.
