John Curtis dominated all facets of Saturday’s Division I-Select state championship game en route to a 23-0 victory over Brother Martin.
Curtis outgained Brother Martin 278 yards to 111 in the contest. The Patriots also limited the Crusaders to only 17 minutes of possession time.
The bulk of the scoring came in the first half.
The Patriots jumped out to a 6-0 lead nine minutes into the first quarter when Dagan Bruno connected with Michael Turner for a 38-yard touchdown pass. Bruno found the end zone himself when he scored on a one-yard quarterback sneak with 2:41 remaining in the second quarter. On the ensuing Brother Martin possession, Curtis defensive back Jermal Callio intercepted Crusaders quarterback Seth Dazat and returned the pick 39 yards. That set up a 29-yard rushing touchdown by Kaheam Smith a few plays later.
The only score of the second half came midway through the third quarter. Jayden Alfonso kicked a 29-yard field goal with 6:45 remaining in the period to make the score 23-0.
In all, Brother Martin committed four turnovers—two interceptions, a fumble, and a turnover on downs.
This state championship is the 27th for John Curtis.
