Four New Orleans-area schools claimed high school state championships in volleyball on Saturday at the LHSAA's Volleyball State Tournament. Metairie Park Country Day, Northlake Christian, Archbishop Hannan, and Dominican all claimed state titles at the Cajundome in Lafayette to wrap up the 2023 season.
Country Day won the Division V state title in the first match of Championship Saturday. The Cajuns swept Westminster Christian of Opelousas in three sets (25-10, 25-11, 25-21) to win their eight consecutive state title. Jane Gambel was named the game's most outstanding player. She recorded 14 kills to lead the Cajuns in that category.
Northlake Christian beat Notre Dame of Crowley to take the Division IV state title home to Covington. The Wolverines swept Notre Dame in three sets (25-22, 25-8, 25-14) to claim their first state championship since 2009., Abby Bailey led all players with 18 kills, earning Division IV Most Outstanding Player honors in the process. Two other New Orleans-area teams reached the semifinals in this division. Northlake edged out John Curtis in five sets to reach the finals, while top-seeded Isadore Newman fell to Notre Dame in four sets in the other semifinal.
In Division III, Archbishop Hannan swept E. D. White in three ultra-competitive sets (25-20, 25-22, 26-24) to win the state championship. Sophie Bonnaffee notched 24 kills and 10 digs to win Most Outstanding Player honors.
Division I featured an all-New Orleans matchup. Dominican won its fourth straight state championship, beating Mt. Carmel three sets to one (25-14, 25-23, 19-25, 33-31) in the title match. Cam Chatellier had a match-high 21 kills, earning the Most Outstanding Player award for the division. A third metro team, Slidell, fell to Dominican in the semifinals.
The Division II title game featured two Lafayette teams battling for the championship. St. Thomas More beat Teurlings three sets to one (25-21, 19-25, 25-17, 25-23) to win the championship. Teurlings beat Ben Franklin to reach the finals, while STM beat St. Scholastica to earn their spot in the title game.
