Nick Piazza certainly didn't walk into the Caesars Superdome last Sunday expecting his name to be in the headlines, but it was, and in the most painful of ways.
The Louisiana native was seriously injured on a play that saw Alvin Kamara flung out of bounds, and the chain gang member was unable to get out of the way as he suffered a dislocated kneecap and a fractured fibula.
Piazza is now recovering at his home in Harvey, but received a surprised gift of a signed ball and jersey this week, according to a report from NOLA.com's Jeff Duncan, who caught up with Piazza. It was among a large number of gifts and well wishes that he has received in the past several days.
“I was embarrassed at first," Piazza said in the report. “I’m not used to being in the spotlight. But after a while, I realized, ‘Ain’t no hiding it now.’ It is what it is.”
The game was stopped for several minutes as medical personnel raced over to attend to Piazza, who was ultimately taken off the field on a backboard and brought to an area hospital. He's expected to undergo surgery in the coming days.
