Bobby Hebert: Saints offense should be better, "but I'm really disappointed in our defense"

It looked like the New Orleans Saints would pull the win out in the first regular season home game of 2021. The Saints were up 11 points with roughly seven minutes left in the game after a Taysom Hill touchdown a few minutes prior.

That would not be the case, though.

“The game ain't over 'til it's over. You have to be able to finish a game,” Bobby Hebert said. “I don't know if we didn't have a sense of urgency at times. If our defense at times thinks they can just show up and they can make things happen.”

The Giants got the ball with 7:01 left in the fourth quarter, needing two scores to come back. It took them one play followed by a successful two point conversion to make it just a 3 point game.

“I don't remember us giving up these kind of chunk plays,” Hebert said. “Two of the Giants drives: 1 play, 52 yards, touchdown; 1 play, 54 yards, touchdown. We haven't witnessed that in awhile.

“We're winning by 11 points, and our defense is supposed to be our strength,” Hebert continued. “Come on. If you want to squeeze the juice box or whatever you want to do and you want to give yourself a nickname, you cannot be winning by 11 points in the fourth quarter with 7:01 left and lose the game.”

After the chunk play touchdown, New York's defense forced a stop; and their offense ground out an 11 play, 59 yard drive that ended with a game-tying field goal with 31 seconds left. The Giants got the ball first in overtime and marched down the field in nine plays to score the game-winning touchdown for their first victory of the season.

“I know we want our offense to be a whole lot better, but I'm really disappointed in our defense,” Hebert said. “I did not think we got a pass rush. I know Deuce [McAllister] said every now and then we got a pass rush. Did Daniel Jones look stressed out? Daniel Jones could have played another game; Daniel Jones could have played eight straight quarters! He was not impacted by our pass rush, and that's the first time I've seen that in awhile.”

We'll see if the Saints can rebound against the Washington Football Team – who did beat the Giants earlier this season – on Sunday.
