The 28-year-old former No. 1 pick is coming off a season that was cut short after just seven games due to a torn ACL, but he showed flashes of why he was thte top pick in 2015 in those games with the Saints, throwing for 1,170 yards, 14 touchdowns and just three interceptions.

“Jameis Winston still in rebuilding process in his career,” Simms said on PFT Live. “I think there is still some positive things to look at to go, ‘oh wow, maybe he’s on the right trajectory to be something for the New Orleans Saints or whatever team in the future.

“…Can he play the game and not do dumb stuff? I knew he could do great stuff…the problem is when he makes mistakes and does bad things they’re like really bad to where you’re like, ‘wait, is this your first time playing football in the NFL?’ We saw that kinda baked out of him last year by Sean Payton.”

Simms does believe the ceiling is high for Winston, though, and says on talent alone he is better than 26.

“We gotta continue this process of cleaning up his game,” Simms said. “I do think he’s one of those guys who has potential to be significantly higher. Ten spots higher. … when you watch the highlight tape you’re like ‘damn, is this one of the 5-8 best quarterbacks in football?’ Some of those things are special. I do think this guy has potential.”
