Detillier: Saints must stop Mahomes, Kelce if they want to win

The New Orleans Saints will seek a return to the win column when they play the Kansas City Chiefs on Monday Night. That will be a tough task for the Saints, as they will be without six key players, including offensive utility player Taysom Hill, because of injuries.

The injury bug may have bitten the Saints hard, but it's also taken a bite out of the Chiefs. That, according to NFL analyst Mike Detillier, could help the Saints get back into in the win column.

"You go through this. Every team goes through this."

Detillier told WWL's Tommy Tucker that the Chiefs are dealing with their own rash of injuries, including injuries to their key running backs and wide receivers.

"I think a big loss for them is not having Isiah Pacheco at running back. He's lost for another six to seven weeks with a broken leg," Detillier said. "It doesn't look like Clyde Edwards-Helaire is going to be playing in this game. He's out. They've lost their two starting receivers in (Rashee) Rice and Hollywood Brown."

Detillier says even with those players out, the Saints defense will still have its hands full trying to neutralize Chiefs quarterback Patrick Mahomes and his favorite target, tight end Travis Kelce.

"They win because of Patrick Mahomes, bottom line," Detillier said. "If I'm the Saints, I make sure that Kelce is not the man to beat me."

According to Detillier, Mahomes has done a good job this season of converting third-and-long situations, getting just enough yardage to keep drives alive and defenses on the field.

"He and Mahomes are on the same wavelength constantly on what to do throwing and catching the ball"

As for the Saints: Detillier said they have to learn one key lesson before they can be successful.

"They've got to figure out how to win games late," Detillier said.
