Jameis Winston won't be retaking the field at the Caesars Superdome for a few more weeks, but his alma mater will make sure he's recognized there as early as this weekend.
That's because the Florida State marching band, called the Marching Chiefs, shared their plans for a tribute to their former quarterback during halftime of its opener against LSU, scheduled for Sunday at the Caesars Superdome.
"We couldn’t possibly play in the home of the New Orleans Saints without playing ‘When the Saints Go Marching In’ with a quick shoutout to our 2013 Heisman winner, National Champion, and Saints QB [Jameis Winston]," the post read.
The post shared a pair of images of the band's marching patterns, which will include a fleur de lis and spell out Jameis' name during their routine.
Winston, an Alabama native, led the Seminoles to an undefeated season and national championship with a win over Auburn in the BCS title game in his freshman season. He won virtually all the quarterbacking awards including the Heisman Trophy during that season, and also quarterbacked for the Seminoles the following year before being taken No. 1 overall by the Tampa Bay Buccaneers in the 2015 draft.
The quarterback returned to Florida State to finish his degree, which he received over the offseason.
Winston joined the Saints as a free agent prior to the 2020 season, sitting behind Drew Brees for a year before winning an offseason competition to take over as the starter in 2021. That season was cut short after seven games due to a knee injury, but he has recovered and is now on track to start for the Saints in their season-opener on the road against Atlanta on Sept. 11. The Saints will take the field in the Superdome for the first time on Sept. 18 against the Bucs.
