Former Saints running back Tony Jones Jr. is headed across country ... again.
The 25-year-old was claimed off waivers from the Saints, who released Jones ahead of their Week 5 victory over the Patriots. Alvin Kamara and Kendre Miller will be the tandem for the Saints going forward, at least until Jamaal Williams can return from injured reserve.
For Jones the departure marks just the latest stop on an NFL journey that's landed him in multiple NFL cities from the Gulf Coast to the West Coast. After a Week 5 victory over the Seahawks last year, Jones was claimed off waivers by Seattle. He appeared in just four games for the Seahawks that season.
Jones spent the 2023 preseason with the Denver Broncos but was among their final cuts, and opted to return to New Orleans as a member of the practice squad ahead of the season. He took on a major role during a Week 2 win over the Carolina Panthers with RB Jamaal Williams going down with an injury and Kendre Miller inactive. He responded with a pair of touchdown runs, the first two of his NFL career. He was signed to the active roster following that game.
Jones could have an opportunity in Arizona depending on the injury status of James Conner, who left early with a knee injury during a Week 5 loss to the Bengals. The backfield also includes Emari Demercado, Keaontay Ingram and Corey Clement.
The Saints have made a handful of additional moves as well, waiving G Tommy Kraemer, who was signed to the active roster ahead of the matchup in New England. That roster spot will be filled by safety Marcus Maye, who is eligible to return from his three-game suspension as of Monday.
The Saints have also moved WR Shaq Davis to the practice squad injured list, and terminated the contract of DB Anthony Johnson.
The Saints (3-2) face off with the Houston Texans (2-3) on the road in Week 6.
