Hebert: Saints should take the ball first, set the tone vs Falcons

The New Orleans Saints did something against the Bucs in Week 17 that they hadn't all season: Score a touchdown on their opening possession.

It set the tone for the entire game, what ultimately turned into a 23-13 victory to keep the season alive. And when the Saints welcome the Falcons to the Superdome in a game that will afford the winner a chance to claim the NFC South, WWL's Bobby Hebert wants to see it again.

“Right now, I’m gonna challenge Dennis Allen. I don’t care if we win the toss, because right now the sexy thing to do is to defer, so you can end the first half and you score and you get the ball at the beginning of the second half," Hebert said. "You know what I say right now, if we have a chance? We want the damn ball and we’re gonna go score."

It might not be a choice, which was the case against the Bucs. It was Tampa who won the toss and they got to decide. In most cases in the modern NFL, teams are happy to defer. That was the case in Week 12 when the Saints visited the Falcons, with the Saints receiving the opening kickoff and promptly going 3 and out.

If the Saints can flip that script this time around, it'll be a recipe for getting the Caesars Superdome crowd fired up early, something the Saints have struggled to do very often in the 2023 season.

"You want to get the fans excited in the Caesars Superdome? How about the first drive you go down and score against the Falcaints," Hebert continued. "You go down and score and then the defense forces a 3 and out. You want everybody to get pumped? That’s how you set the tone."
