Hebert: Spencer Rattler had the stronger finish to Saints minicamp

The quarterback battle won't be decided any time soon for the New Orleans Saints, but the Cajun Cannon saw a clear winner on Day 2 of Saints minicamp.

That was Spencer Rattler, Bobby Hebert said, who made the play of the day with 20-yard TD to Dante Pettis and got the ball out of his hands on time as the Saints continued to work 7-on-7 drills.

“It’s kind of been back and forth between Spencer Rattler and Tyler Shough, well today it was definitely Spencer Rattler," Hebert said. "No, I don’t think it was even close. How they can evaluate what happened in practice, I think Spencer Rattler definitely won the day. He was just more precise."

The performance marked a strong bounce back from Day 1 that featured a handful of difficult reps to close out the day under the scorching sun in Metairie.

The team worked again on situational drills, with Rattler going 10-for-16 and Tyler Shough 9-for-15. They got the same number of reps, though the young QB held the ball and scrambled multiple times, a pet peeve for the Cajun Cannon.

"What are you scrambling for? There’s no rush," Hebert continued. "Now, I know you might want to extend a play and you don’t just want to stand back in the pocket in 7-on-7 and say oh, I’ve got 5 seconds to throw. No, I would like a quarterback more when you’re doing 7-on-7, you can pick and choose to scramble."

Nothing was decided this week, and we'll have to wait until July to see Rattler and Shough battle it out again. The Saints opted to cancel the final day of minicamp practices in lieu of a team outing to Five-o-Fore golf.
