There once was a time back during the peak Drew Brees-Sean Payton offenses that Bobby Hebert can recall fans coming to him saying: Man, I wish the games were closer.
The Saints were winning games so cleanly and comfortably, it actually got boring. Well, as the Cajun Cannon explains, that's not something fans will have to worry about this year.
"You’re going to be entertained this year," Hebert said after the Saints beat the Panthers 20-17 in Week 2. "Because next week against the Packers? I think it’s going down to the wire again. We ain’t crushing nobody.”
That's been the story each of the first two weeks, with the Saints defense starring but the offense taking a full half to get untracked. In Week 1 they went into the break trailing the Titans 9-6. This week they went in leading Carolina 6-3. Not exactly high-flying offensive performances.
The first halves featured shoddy protection and uneven quarterback play, with a bad-decision interception at the tail end of both from Derek Carr. Things changed in the second half of each. The protection got better and Carr worked the ball downfield to Chris Olave and Rashid Shaheed.
“We need Derek Carr to play better," Hebert said. "We need him to be more of a significant edge over the opposing quarterback. Now, that wasn’t necessarily the case. Not that there was anything to write home about Bryce Young and what he did, and then you’re facing Jordan Love. Jordan Love is like a rookie who we’re playing next week against the Packers. Hell yea we should beat them.”
Carr finished the game 21-36 for 228 yards, no TDs and an interception. The Saints got in the endzone twice via Tony Jones Jr. runs, with the practice squad call-up forced into a featured role after Jamaal Williams went down with a hamstring injury.
The good news? The Saints keep finding a way. The Saints are 2-0 for the first time since 2013, and that's a good thing. Just make sure you keep the antacids stocked.
These are the kind of games that’ll give you an ulcer if the whole season is going to be like this," Hebert said. "You're mad, but somehow the Saints won.”
