The New Orleans Saints' crowded WR room will have one fewer member going forward in training camp: Ja'Lynn Polk is retiring from the NFL.
The team announced they had placed Polk on the reserve/retired list Sunday afternoon, hours after completing the team's fourth camp practice. Polk had been absent each of the last two practices for what the team described as personal reasons.
The news is stunning for a player who was drafted in the second round by the New England Patriots just two seasons ago. He struggled to latch on as a rookie in 2024 and landed on injured reserve due to a shoulder injury early in the 2025 camp process. Polk was ultimately traded to the Saints in exchange for a 2027 6th round pick. The Saints also received a 2028 7th rounder in the deal.

The Saints also traded for WR Devaughn Vele prior to the 2025 season and selected WRs Jordyn Tyson, Bryce Lance and Barion Brown in the most recent draft. The Saints last week also inked star WR Chris Olave to a 4-year, $132 million contract extension.
The 24-year-old Polk was busy during OTAs and minicamp, hauling in multiple passes, but had been quiet over the first two days of camp. It's unclear exactly what prompted the sudden retirement. Polk had 2 years remaining on his 4-year, $9.6 million rookie deal. He never appeared in a regular or preseason game for the Saints, and ends his career -- assuming there is no return down the line -- with 12 catches for 87 yards and two touchdowns across 15 games played.
The departure could mean potential opportunity for players down the depth chart to work their way up. One player to watch could be former 5th round pick Bub Means, who has spent the majority of the past two seasons on IR due to ankle injuries, but has been quietly productive throughout camp. Mason Tipton is also yet to make his practice debut as he works back from offseason surgery, but has successfully battled his way onto the roster each of the past two seasons.
The Saints will be back in action on Monday for their first fully-padded practice of the offseason, after which head coach Kellen Moore will speak to the media and likely address Polk's decision.
