Kellen Moore on WWL: Saints will 'respond the right way' after 3rd straight loss

The New Orleans Saints are in need of a course correction after a brutal three-game losing streak, all inside the Caesars Superdome.

Speaking on WWL Radio Monday, head coach Kellen Moore said it's about weathering the storm.

"Certainly that was a disappointing loss for us. ... We have to learn from this, we have to grow from it. That’s really the path you have to take," Moore told WWL's Mike Hoss and Bobby Hebert. "The National Football League is a challenging league every week and you know, just a couple more go our way and you can quickly feel a lot better about this thing and I think we’ve got the right kind of guys in the locker room. They’ll respond the right way."

That response will have to come on the road against the New York Giants, a team that's starting backup quarterback Jameis Winston after a season-ending injury to Jaxson Dart. They've found their way to 3-1-1, but have done so by the thinnest of margins. Beating both the Cardinals and Titans with game-sealing interceptions on goal line stands and tying the Commanders after a 14-point rally and bizarre end-of-game sequence where Washington failed to attempt a field goal despite being well within range.

The Saints have had the Giants' number in recent years with three straight wins head-to-head, including a 26-14 win last season.

“I think it’s a team that’s playing a really fast, physical, confident brand of football," Moore said. "You know, I think [Giants HC John Harbaugh] has done a really good job of getting these guys going and they had a chance to win that game. Certainly they were in field goal range and had a chance to win it, unfortunately they had a fumble and were able to overcome that and end in a unique tie. But these guys have some unique playmakers on both sides of the football and it’ll be a fun challenge for us.”

The Saints (1-4) and Giants (3-1-1) will meet at Sunday at noon inside Metlife Stadium. Catch all the action on WWL and Audacy.

MORE FROM MOORE

On facing blitz-heavy defenses

“Everyone is trying to find an edge and, you know, Minnesota has done an excellent job, [Vikings DC Brian Flores] has done an excellent job ... with the way they pressure the quarterback. Everyone is going to follow suit with that until you address it and you find the solutions, just like people are using tight ends and having success there, they’re going to continue to try and utilize those matchups until it’s corrected. That’s what the NFL is all about, finding these edges and finding these opportunities, and people will continue to attack that way until you address it.”

On QB Tyler Shough

“I think his confidence level, just lke the rest of our team, a lot of urgency to get better, but we’ll be fine. We’re gonna have opportunities moving forward here in the NFL and this is what the NFL is about. You’ve got to be resilient. You’ve got to be able to handle some unfortunate downs at times. Obviously this is a little tough stretch for us, you know, and I think our guys are in the right mindset, mentality of getting better.”

On not running much play action

“We have to do a better job of it. That starts with me giving ourself more opportunities, playing in those situations more often and so Minnesota, they did a good job schematically, they did a better job than us. We weren’t able to get into the play the play action in that game with the pressure that they were providing and the different looks that they were giving us, so I’ve got to do a better job with that, because obviously there’s value in it and we’ve had success in it.”
