Jameis Winston has no shortage of fans in New Orleans, but he's heading elsewhere in this free agency cycle.
But he made things clear in a farewell post on social media this week, which was more like a love letter to the city as he departs for the backup job with the Browns.

"NOLA, the Superdome is the birthplace of my first NFL win, so saying farewell I don't know where to begin," Winston shared in the video. "I'll start with expressing gratitude and thanks to all of Who Day Nation, the Saints organization and Mrs. [Gayle Benson]. I am grateful for all my teammates, coaches, trainers, the entire Saints support staff & honestly, the whole city.
"I'm grateful for the festivals, Mardi Gras, second lines, great music, world class chefs and witnessing the NOLA culture shine! I'm grateful for the love, encouragement, perseverance and real people who embraces this little light of mine. I love you New Orleans, through and through. Trust and believe that y'all haven't seen the last of Jaboo."
It was a heartfelt message to wrap up one of the more interesting player arcs that has come through the organization in some time. Winston arrived in New Orleans after departing the NFC South rival Bucs, who had opted not to re-sign their former No. 1 overall pick. Winston sat behind Drew Brees in the 2020 season with the goal of taking over the job after Brees retired. Winston did just that, leading the team to a 5-2 start in 2021 but having that year ended early with a significant knee injury.
Winston rehabbed and returned the following season but again suffered injuries and ultimately was supplanted in the starting role by Andy Dalton. The following season Winston found himself shunted to the backup role again with the addition of Derek Carr. Still, Winston had several opportunities to step in for big moments with Carr departing early with injuries in three separate games, all of which ended in Saints losses.
One of the lasting images of Winston in New Orleans came on his final play, when he and the players on the field defied the coaches' call and handed the ball to Jamaal Williams out of the victory formation for a controversial touchdown. Winston owned the decision after the game and chalked it up to teammates supporting each other.
Winston is expected to back up Deshaun Watson with the Browns in the 2024 season. The Saints, meanwhile, will likely continue to develop second-year pro Jake Haener in the backup role and have also signed journeyman Nathan Peterman to fill out the QB room.
