I still wouldn't celebrate too much for Matthew Hayball until waivers clear, because it's very realistic to think the Saints might turn to an outside hire at specialist if someone, say a Pressley Harvin III, has caught their eye during preseason action. For Smyth this is all part of the process. I highly doubt another team will spend a waiver claim on a guy they've seen kick once in a game, because that'd mean carving out a 53-man roster spot and every NFL team has gone through tough cuts today. If he clears he'll almost certainly land in the IPP spot on the practice squad and we'll revisit this conversation a year from now. Blake Grupe went 5-5 on FGs and 5-5 on PATs in the preseason.
