Jersey numbers are not the only uniform changes happening in the NFL.
According to a memo sent to teams on Thursday afternoon, the league will allow for alternative helmets to be used starting in the 2022 season.
This opens the door for teams to use a second helmet with their alternate, color rush or throwback uniforms. Among some of the notable secondary helmets includes Pat Patriot, Bucco Bruce and the Kelly Green Eagles helmets.
The NFL had previously prohibited the use of alternate helmets, citing player safety as the reason as teams wanted every player to have one helmet to fit properly and not alter it during the season.
It didn't take long for Saints fans (and players) to begin calling for the return of the gold jersey. Defensive end Cam Jordan, specifically, says he's been waiting quite a while to see it happen.
In the helmet realm the Saints don't have any true alternate logos or colors in their history, but they could choose to bring back the old helmet stylings with a brighter, non-matte shade of gold and less stylized fleur-de-lis.
The new policy will require teams to have a new set of alternate helmets for every player on the roster that will match the make, model and size as the player’s primary helmet.
Players will be required to get fitted for both the primary and alternate helmets in training camp.
