The New Orleans Saints have a fiery position battle at cornerback heading into the 2021 season, but one veteran appears to have taken his name out of consideration.

Patrick Robinson, a first round pick of the Saints in the 2010 season, is planning to retire after 11 NFL seasons. The news was first reported by Ian Rapoport of the NFL Network.

Robinson began his career with the Saints before spending seasons with the then-San Diego Chargers, Indianapolis Colts and Philadelphia Eagles, helping to win a Super Bowl with the latter team in 2017. Robinson spent the past three seasons with the Saints, performing well in big moments when thrust into a starting role but frequently battling injuries.

Robinson is the second Saints player that's opted to retire since the start of camp, joining defensive tackle Ryan Glasgow.

The departure adds even more intrigue to the race for the starting outside corner slot across from Marshon Lattimore, as well as depth if Lattimore ends up facing a suspension stemming from an offseason arrest. Veterans Ken Crawley and Prince Amukamara have been battling to fill that role, along with young players including rookie Paulson Adebo. The Saints open up their preseason slate on Saturday against the Baltimore Ravens.
