Saints 27, 49ers 13: Brees injured, Winston helps seal victory

Jameis Winston came on in relief of an injured Drew Brees and was able to help the Saints seal a 27-13 win against the San Francisco 49ers Sunday in the Mercedes-Benz Superdome.

Brees finished the first half 8-of-13 for 76 yards and touchdown and showed no signs of an apparent injury as he finished the first half. He remained on the sideline when New Orleans took the field for the start of the third quarter and was officially listed as questionable to return with a rib injury.


Prior to exiting the game, he helped New Orleans score 17-straight points.

The 49ers struck first after Nick Mullens capped a 13-play, 75-yard drive with a 4-yard touchdown pass to rookie receiver Brando Aiyuk.

San Francisco scored again to start the second quarter when Robbie Gould his a 32-yard field goal to give the 49ers a 10-0 lead. That drive was set up after Marcell Harris recovered the ball following a muffed punt from Deonte Harris.

Harris however ripped off a 75-yard return on the ensuing kickoff. Which set up a 49-yard Will Lutz field goal.

New Orleans got back in to San Francisco when Marquez Callaway recovered Morstead’s punt that bounced off of 49ers defensive back Ken Webster.
 
Alvin Kamara tied the score at 10-10 with a 2-yard touchdown run four plays later.

The Saints took a 17-10 lead on Kamara’s second touchdown of the game. The running back capped a six -play, 57-yard drive with a 3-yard touchdown reception from Brees. The score was set up by an 8 and 34-yard reception by Kamara.

Jameis Winston started the second half for the Saints after Brees was officially listed was questionable to return with a rib injury.

Winston helped the Saints add to their lead in the fourth quarter when he helped the guide the team on a 12-play, 59-yard drive that ended with a 23-yard field goal by Lutz.

The Saints took a 27-10 lead with 7:29 to play in the fourth quarter after Kamara scored his third touchdown of the game. The score capped a three-play, 22-yard drive that was started after Callaway recovered a punt that was muffed by Ritchie James.

The 49ers cut back into the lead with a 40-yard field goal from Gould with 5:54 to play.

The 49ers were threatening to score again but Patrick Robinson was able to help seal the victory with his second interception of the season.
