Saints 27, Panthers 24: New Orleans hangs on to earn fourth victory


The New Orleans Saints picked up their fourth win of the season Sunday after a 27-24 win against the Panthers in the Mercedes Benz Superdome.

Panthers kicker Joey Slye was just short on a game-tying 65-yard field goal attempt with two minutes to play, and the Saints were able to seal the victory.

Here’s how the it happened.

First quarter 

Saints 7, Panthers 0, 6:34: Jared Cook made a spectacular catch on a 4-yard pass from Drew Brees for the touchdown. Brees was 6-of-6 for 37 yards on the 14-play, 75-yard drive that took 8:26 seconds off the clock.

Saints 7, Panthers 3, 1:54: Panthers kicker Joey Slye hit a 43-yard field goal to cap a nine-play, 50-yard drive.

Second quarter

Saints 14, Panthers 3, 12:13: Brees scored on a 1-yard touchdown run to cap a nine-play, 78-yard drive. 

Saints 14, Panthers 10, 10:56: Teddy Bridgewater connects with DJ Moore for a 74-yard touchdown pass.

Panthers 17, Saints 14, 1:37: Moore took Bridgewater’s shovel pass into the end zone for a 7-yard touchdown. The score capped a nine-play, 65-yard drive that started when Carolina’s Brian Burns forced a fumble from Brees that was recovered by Marquis Haynes.

Saints 21, Panthers 17, :02: Brees capped an eight-play, 75-yard drive with a 4-yard pass to Deonte Harris. The score was Harris’ first career receiving touchdown.

Third quarter

Saints 24, Panther 17, 4:24: Wil Lutz hit a 41-yard field goal. A key play on the drive was a 14-yard reception on third down by Alvin Kamara.  

Panthers 24, Saints 24, :08: Curtis Samuel scored on a 5-yard run to finish an eight-play, 75-yard drive.

Fourth quarter

Saints 27, Panthers 24, 7:59: Lutz was good on a 43-yard field goal attempt.
