Saints bringing back former LSU standout, Louisiana native Will Clapp
The New Orleans Saints latest offseason move continued on this year's theme: Familiarity.
The team has agreed to terms on a 1-year deal with Will Clapp, a former LSU standout and Metairie native who was drafted in the 7th round by New Orleans in 2018 and spent 4 years with the team.
The Brother Martin alum appeared in 34 games for the Saints, primarily as a jumbo TE and special teamer, before departing in free agency in 2022. Clapp has spent the past three seasons split between the Chargers and Bills and has started in 22 games, 11 of which came at center for the Chargers in the 2023 season. That group was led buy new Saints defensive coordinator Brandon Staley at head coach, new Saints head coach Kellen Moore as offensive coordinator and new Saints OL coach Brendan Nugent in that same position.
Clapp figures to be a helpful addition in terms of installing Moore's new offense, and could factor in as center depth behind Erik McCoy, who missed 10 games due to injury last year, creating a void and revolving door at the center position.
The Saints have been somewhat low-key in free agency to this point, also coming to terms on deals for former Chiefs safety Justin Reid, another Louisiana native, and former Saints cornerback Isaac Yiadom. The team has also re-signed WR Dante Pettis and inked DE Chase Young and TE Juwan Johnson to 3-year extensions. Another Louisiana return will come in the form of former LSU standout DT Davon Godchaux, whom the team traded for ahead of free agency.
