Saints cut veteran CB Bradley Roby in surprise move: report

The New Orleans Saints are cutting down to their 53-man roster, and it didn't take long for the first surprise move to land.

The team is cutting veteran cornerback Bradley Roby, according to reports, a surprise move after he took a bulk of the first-team slot reps throughout training camp.

Roby took to Twitter to vent after receiving the news, posting: "Cutting costs at all cost might cost you in the end." He followed that up with a thank you to fans and his former teammates.

The decision to part ways with the 9-year veteran out of Ohio State is surprising, but also understandable considering the depth this roster has at defensive back. Marshon Lattimore and Paulson Adebo appear poised to start on the outside, and the question becomes who takes over in the slot with options including second-year pro Alontae Taylor and veteran Ugo Amadi.

Roby appeared in 27 games over his two seasons with the Saints, starting 11. He logged 59 total tackles, 10 passes defensed, 2 fumble recoveries and an interception during that tenure. Roby departs late in the offseason similarly to how he arrived, which was via trade in 2021 just ahead of Week 1 with the Saints seeking cornerback depth. As a vested veteran, Roby is now free to sign with whatever team he chooses.

The Saints were busy on the CB room early in the cycle of cuts, also parting ways with Adrian Frye and Troy Pride. All NFL teams were required to be cut down to 53 players as of 3 p.m. (central).
