Saints designate Marquez Callaway to return to practice, sign QB Trevor Siemian to practice squad

The New Orleans Saints designated receiver Marquez Callaway, who’s spent the past three games in injured reserve, to return practice Tuesday.

Callaway suffered a knee injury in the Saints’ win against the Denver Broncos earlier this month. Prior to the injury the undrafted rookie out of Tennessee, had impressed in a backup role as a receiver catching 15 passes for 136 yards and as a kick returner averaging 10.6 yards per punt and 23.5 yards per kickoff return.

Callaway will still be on injured reserve until the Saints activate him. If he’s able to play Friday against the Vikings, he’d proved depth to a receiver group that’s without Michael Thomas, who’s on injured reserve, and could potentially be without receiver Tre’Quan Smith who missed practice Tuesday.

The Saints also signed tight end Garrett Griffin and quarterback Trevor Siemian to the practice squad.

Siemian was waived by the Saints Saturday but with backup quarterback Jameis Winston on the reserve/COVID-19 list, he’ll provide depth behind Drew Brees and Taysom Hill.
