Former Dome Patrol Linebacker Sam Mills is finally Hall of Fame Bound!
As in the Pro Football Hall of Fame in Canton, Ohio. Mills will be a part of the 2022 class enshrined this summer. The "Field Mouse," as he was affectionately nickname during his 12 seasons in the NFL and another 4 in the USFL, tallied five Pro Bowl appearances and was a part of two USFL championship teams.
His former teammate, the Cajun Cannon Bobby Hebert, said this is long overdue. Mills had been a Hall of Fame finalist each of the past two seasons, but had narrowly missed the final cut each time.
"Sam was one of the best players and teammates I've ever seen. He's a true leader and just an amazing football player," Hebert said. Mills played with the Saints famed "Dome Patrol" defense from 1986-94. He was added to the team's Ring of Honor in the 2021 season, alongside Tom Benson, Rickey Jackson, Will Smith, Archie Manning, Willie Roaf and Morten Andersen.
Mills finished his Saints career in 1994, going on to play for the Carolina Panthers from 1995-97. That short stint left its mark though, including a statue that stands outside Carolina's Bank of America Stadium. The team still uses Mills' rallying cry of "keep pounding," the mantra he led during the team's run to Super Bowl 38. Mills died in 2005 from complications stemming from intestinal cancer.
Long live "Field Mouse" and RIP to another Saints legend who will be remembered forever in Canton, Ohio!
