Saints end NFL Draft wait by picking QB Spencer Rattler in 5th round

The New Orleans Saints waited 109 draft slots in between picks, but they certainly kept things interesting with South Carolina QB Spencer Rattler at No. 150 overall.

The Saints used their first of three 5th round selections on Rattler, who was the MVP of the Senior Bowl game in February. The Saints have another pair of Senior Bowl MVPs already on the roster in the form of Jake Haener and Kellen Mond.

Rattler began his career at Oklahoma before transferring to the Gamecocks to finish out his career. Rattler started all 12 of South Carolina's games in 2023, throwing for 3,186 yards and 19 touchdowns against 8 interceptions.

The 2024 draft featured a record six quarterbacks in the first 12 selections (Caleb Williams, Jayden Daniels, Drake Maye, Michael Penix, JJ McCarthy and Michael Penix), but the position went dark until the Saints broke the skid in Round 5.

Rattler was the third pick of the draft for the Saints after Oregon State OT Taliese Fuaga at No. 14 and Alabama CB Kool-Aid McKinstry at 41, with the Saints trading up from No. 45. The Saints have four more selections remaining, barring trades.

The rookie QB will join a crowded room that now includes starter Derek Carr, Haener, Mond and veterans Nathan Peterman and Taysom Hill.
