The New Orleans Saints are exploring the possibility of playing upcoming games in LSU’s Tiger Stadium.
The news was first reported by ESPN’s Adam Schefter.
Schefter reports per Saints Executive Vice President of Communications Greg Bensel, that team officials are meeting with LSU officials about potentially hosting some upcoming games in Baton Rouge.
"Obviously, our overwhelming preference is to play our games in the Mercedes-Benz Superdome with partial fan attendance but there has been no indication from the city on when, or if, this might be approved,” Bensel told Schefter.
LSU Senior Associate Athletic Director Robert Munson confirmed the discussions and said Tiger Stadium is prepared to host New Orleans if needed.
“These are extraordinary times and we are here to help our great neighbors in any way that we can," Munson said in a statement. "We continue to have very productive discussions with the Saints organization and, if need be, are prepared to host the Saints in Tiger Stadium this season.”
The Saints played their first home game in an empty Mercedes-Benz Superdome and their following two contests to a small crowd of family and friends as the City of New Orleans has declined to allow even a limited number of fans in to the arena.
New Orleans mayor Latoya Cantrell said in a statement via her Twitter account that the city is considering an exemption that would allow fans into Superdome, but would not set an "artificial timeline" for when that might be.
