A turbulent week of news in the Saints secondary continued on Thursday.

Presumptive starter Marcus Maye was arrested earlier in the day in an alleged assault with a firearm. The news was first reported by NewOrleans.Football.

Few details were immediately available. Maye was not present at the team's practice at the team's afternoon practice. Maye was arrested by the Jefferson Parish Sheriff's Office and his bond was set at $30,000.

The incident was described by JPSO as "road rage," with Maye identified as the driver of a black SUV and accused of pointing a firearm at a "vehicle that was occupied by several juvenile females." JPSO said the incident occurred on Aug. 29.

Maye's attorney released the following statement, per Tom Pelissero of the NFL Network: “Marcus vehemently denies the allegation from a motor vehicle incident, and looks forward to defending himself when all the facts come out.”

Saints head coach Dennis Allen said the team was aware of the arrest and still gathering information and there would be no official comment as of Thursday afternoon.

The news strikes at a particularly inopportune time for the team, having just 2 days earlier sent safety C.J. Gardner-Johnson to the Philadelphia Eagles by trade. Maye, 29, was already facing potential discipline relative to a DUI incident in 2021 that is still going through the court system.

The former Jets safety was one of the earliest signings in the Saints' offseason and was in line to replace the departed Marcus Williams, who departed to the Baltimore Ravens in free agency. Malcolm Jenkins also retired following the 2021 season.

The remainder of the Saints' safety room consists of Tyrann Mathieu, Justin Evans, J.T. Gray, P.J. Williams and Daniel Sorenson.
