With a new head coach taking over, is it time to put for the New Orleans Saints to move on from quarterback Derek Carr?
One NFL analyst says: yes.
"Is he the future of this team? No," WWL's Mike Detillier said on Monday, noting that Carr's record as a Saint hangs around the .500 mark. "You know what you have with Derek Carr. It's not going to be any better."
Detillier says the Saints should cut Carr or try to trade him. However, he notes that Carr's contract and the potential salary cap hit the Saints would take could pose some problems. Regardless, Detillier believes Saints fans have seen the last of Carr as the team's full-time starter.
"I've got a feeling that we're going to be seeing a lot of Spencer Rattler this year," Detillier said. "I do think this team goes out and gets a veteran quarterback."
Detillier expects the Saints to give Rattler the chance to prove himself as the team's full-time starting quarterback in 2025. According to Detillier, the sooner the Saints make Rattler the QB 1, the sooner he can build a rapport with his receivers and offensive line.
"I think most quarterbacks what that cohesiveness with themselves along with the offensive line and also their receivers, and last year, Spencer didn't have that," Detillier said. "They have a comfort zone with the wideouts. They're both on the same page. And remember: for most of (the 2024) season, the Saints were without both Chris Olave and Rashid Shaheed, the two starting receivers. You had a difficult time from game to game to tell you who was going to play at wide receiver."
