Saints injury report, Thursday: Erik McCoy back to practice for first time since Week 3

The New Orleans Saints are close to getting a very important player back in the fold, based on Thursday's practice.

Center Erik McCoy was in action for the first time since Week 3, with the Saints officially opening his 21-day return to practice window from injured reserve. McCoy, a team captain and leader of the offensive line group has been out since suffering a groin injury early in a loss to the Eagles, which required surgery to correct.

In McCoy's absence the Saints turned to both Lucas Patrick and Shane Lemiux, both of whom have been managing injuries of their own. Since Week 6 that role has belonged to veteran Connor McGovern, whom the Saints signed off of the Jets practice squad midseason.

Here's how the Saints injury report broke down on Thursday.

The lone change other than McCoy came with S Will Harris (hamstring) being upgraded to full. Harris, another player who had his IR return window opened this week has been out since Week 5 due to a hamstring injury suffered during a loss to the Chiefs.

The Saints could be in even more dire straits at wide receiver, with Cedrick Wilson (shoulder) missing the first two days of practice and trending in the direction of not being available. The Saints are also expected to be without Chris Olave, who suffered a second concussion in a month during the loss to the Panthers and is expected to consult with specialists as he assesses his options.

With Rashid Shaheed (knee) and Bub Means (ankle) also on IR, that leaves the Saints with just UDFAs Mason Tipton and Jermaine Jackson, along with newcomer Marquez Valdes-Scantling on the active roster. The Saints could also turn to practice squad options, including Equanimeous St. Brown, Dante Pettis and Kevin Austin Jr.

Atlanta's injury situation was also fairly static, with just one change from Wednesday.

Here's how things broke down for the Falcons:
