Another familiar face will be headed out to Denver to rejoin Sean Payton and several former teammates as a member of the Broncos.
Veteran kicker Wil Lutz will be traded to Denver, according to reports, a final statement in a kicker competition that has spanned the offseason. The move means UDFA Blake Grupe will go into the season as the kicker, a decision that certainly will be dissected throughout the year.
The trade will net the Saints a 2024 7th round pick, per Broncos reporter Mike Klis.
Grupe was spot on throughout camp and his three preseason games, with his lone miss coming from 60 yards out in the finale against the Texans.
Lutz will now rejoin his former coach and several former teammates, including tight end Adam Trautman, who was traded to Denver earlier this offseason. The Broncos roster has also featured former Saints RB Tony Jones Jr. and receivers Marquez Callaway and Lil'Jordan Humphrey throughout camp.
The 29-year-old Lutz has played all seven of his NFL seasons in New Orleans, with 165 makes on 195 attempts. His longest kick was from 60 in a loss to the Vikings in London last season. The news of his trade comes on a busy day of cuts with all 32 teams required to trim their rosters to 53 players by 3 p.m. (central).
