Saints camp takeaways (Aug. 19): Tre'Quan Smith absent again ahead of MNF

The 17th practice of this 2021 Saints training was held indoors and there were nine players we did not see as preseason game No. 2 approaches.

Here's who we didn't see at camp practice on Thursday:

- K Wil Lutz
- WR Tre'Quan Smith
- WR Tommylee Lewis
- FB Alex Armah
- C/G Will Clapp
- LB Pete Werner
- DE Payton Turner
- S Malcolm Jenkins
- DT Malcolm Roach

The two rookies mentioned, Turner and Werner, have missed a significant chunk of time and their status for Monday Night Football is questionable at best. Tre’Quan had just gotten back Tuesday from a leg issue and didn’t take part fully since returning.

Any concerns about Ryan Ramczyk following two straight days off were quelled, seeing No. 71 back at work today.

TWO PICK SIXES?

The swarming Saints defense managed two interceptions that would have been returned for touchdowns. Jameis Winston was fortunate the refs saved his mistake to CB Ken Crawley as a flag for illegal contact was thrown, but the penalty was not at the pot of attack. This mess didn’t occur in full team drills, but in 7-on-7s where there isn’t a pass rush.

No dirty laundry to save Taysom Hill. During 11-on-11s, he was picked off by linebacker Andrew Dowell, who then had a clear path to the endzone.  Something to look for Monday Night is Hull trying a flea-flicker. He ended up running with no one open this morning, but it was the 2nd or 3rd time we’ve seen them work on the play.

Overall, in full team, Winston finished 11-of-17 while Hill was 14-of-19 with an INT.
