Schlereth: Saints 'learning how to win' is far more important than a draft pick

The New Orleans Saints are one of xx winless teams left in the 2025 season. That means, obviously, a top pick in next year's draft is still on the table -- even if it's a long way from the minds of the decision-makers in the building.

But the Saints have been close and seem to have found a recipe to start adding wins to their ledger, and NFL Insider Mark Schlereth broke down on WWL Radio this week, and finding that winning combination is far more important than draft projections.

"It doesn’t just feel, to me, like Kellen Moore, you know, is doing what a lot of teams or a lot of people out there, a lot of fans, like, hey, we’ve just got to tank so we can get a good college quarterback. Let me just tell you this, you don’t know which ones are going to be good. ... The best thing you can do is fight," Schlereth said, "continue to try to learn how to win, because learning how to win and developing that culture of accountability and those things are far more important to me than, boy, we’re gonna go after this college kid that we have no idea whether he’s gonna be good at this level or not.”

The blueprint might have been shown a week ago, with the Saints rushing for 189 yards and averaging well over 5 yards per attempt in a hard-fought loss to the Bills that saw the Saints with a prime opportunity to take the lead in the 4th quarter. The Week 5 matchup looks like it could profile similarly, with the Giants possessing as elite a pass-rushing group as you'll find, but statistically one of the most porous run defense units in the NFL.

"There is a formula for winning, especially when, let’s face it, man, you’re still in just the talent procurement phase of the organization. You’ve got to get more talented and that’s just part of the deal," Schlereth continued. "It’s the cyclical nature of football and you know, you’ve got some great years and you have some down years and you’ve got to figure it out, but that’s a great way to be able to compete, it’s a great way to be able to … fight, and a great way to support young quarterbacks who don’t have a lot of experience and give them the best chance to win."

The Saints (0-4) host the Giants (1-3) at noon inside the Caesars Superdome. Catch all the action on WWL and Audacy.
