The New Orleans Saints were reportedly one of several teams with coaches and scouts at the Fargodome for North Dakota State quarterback Trey Lance's pro day.
The 6-foot-3, 221-pound passer is one of the top prospects at his position in this year's draft class and has drawn comparison's to some of the NFL's top quarterbacks including Houston's Deshaun Watson and Baltimore's Lamar Jackson.
But Lance's coaches think he'll be a player others will be compared to when it's all said and done.
"I think Trey is going to be Trey Lance and that they're going to model people after him," North Dakota State quarterbacks coach Randy Hedurg said.
And that's exactly what the Minnesota native is focused on.
"Everyone can have their own comparison or whatever it is, so yeah," Lance said. "I think for me I, like, to try to take a lot of pieces from a lot of different guy's games, but at the end of the day, I'm Trey Lance and I'm not anybody else."
He showed off some of the tools Friday that helped him have a short but decorated career for the Bison including his accuracy as a passer. He completed 65 percent of his passes in the 19 games he appeared in and threw 30 touchdown passes and just one single interception.
While his numbers were impressive, he recognizes that he doesn't have the same body of work other top quarterback prospects in this year's class. That's partly due to the COVID-19 pandemic which limited North Dakota State to just one game in 2020.
"It would have been great to (play a full season)," he said. "Obviously, I was anticipating to win another National Championship in January and then have to make a decision then but it didn't work out that way.
"Everyone got cheated out of something with COVID. So for me, my mindset towards it is just controlling what I can control and not worrying about everything else."
Lance said he's taking that same approach with whatever team he winds up with.
"I think whatever situation I'm put into, I'm gonna get as prepared as possible to be ready to go whenever the coaches see fit," he said. "But I'm just looking for opportunity anywhere at this point. Obviously, I don't pick where I go, but I'd be super grateful to go anywhere."
