New Orleans native Tyron Johnson made his NFL regular season debut last Sunday when Los Angeles Chargers called him up from the practice squad in their game against the Tampa Bay Buccaneers.
Johnson quickly made an impact in that matchup scoring on a 53-yard reception.
Chargers coach Anthony Lynn said the former Oklahoma State receiver has come a long way since joining the team’s practice squad last season.
“I think he’s bounced around the league on two or three practice squads,” Lynn said. “We got him and we just had a real, honest conversation. He’s a young man with size and speed and the skill set should not be bouncing around the league the way you’re doing it right now.
“He took it to heart and he went out and he proved it. He worked his tail off every single day. He came back this year in great shape even though we didn’t have an offseason program.
“He’s just done some things in practice that really impressed and I just said, ‘As soon as I get a chance to bring him up, I’m going to.’ And we did and he produced. He’s definitely going to be up again this week.”
Johnson will play his first game in the Mercedes-Benz Superdome since 2014 when he helped Warren Easton to an appearance in the Class 4A state championship game.
