What Saints had to say after Jameis Winston's 'significant' injury: 'This win was for him'

Sean Payton typically doesn't address injuries in his post-game press conferences, but he made an exception when it came to Jameis Winston this week.

The injury is "significant" he said, with the coach and Winston's teammates each saying as much without saying it. Winston was spotted on video dancing in the locker room after the win. He was smiling "like nothing happened," Alvin Kamara said.

It was reported to be an ACL injury. Here's what Payton, Kamara and others had to say about the QB's injury after the game.

“He felt something, and he’s on crutches right now. I don’t want to say until I get a chance to talk to the doctors. … When he got up and then had to go back down, you get a little concerned.”

Payton added that he cried when I saw him in the locker room after the game.

“[Winston] has that trait of ... you don’t know what the score is as you watch the body language of a quarterback. I think that’s an important trait. And you could never tell if you were winning and losing when you tune in and you saw Drew [Brees], until the score was put up. Jameis is one of those guys that’s that way. Glass-half full, sees the positives in the adversity. And I think to some degree I’m probably a little like that, too. But man, I’m glad we were able to win. He got a game ball as well."

“I followed up with him at halftime, spoke for a little bit. You look at him in the face and he’s dancing he’s yelling, you would've never know that he was hurt. That’s just who he is. But yea, hope he gets back sooner than later.”

“This win was for him. I just feel for the guy, I love him so much. … He’s got this infectious personality, and you’re just frickin’ gutted when you see anybody hurt. But watching him be hurt was tough.”

ALVIN KAMARA

“We all know Jameis, he’s a character. … I don’t even want to call it emotion. It’s fire. That dude, he’s in love with winning and in love with the process, in love with this team. He wasn’t even worried about his leg, he was more so worried about not being able to be out there and cheer with us and lead us. That’s what he was saying earlier. You’ve got a guy like that cares more about others than himself. It’s contagious. You hate when a guy like that goes down. It’s like, why do bad things happen to people like that. … Hopefully it’s not too bad and hopefully we can get him back out here, but just pray for him.”
