It's official: Tulane University has announced to Green Wave fans that Jon Sumrall will return to Uptown to be the football team's new head coach.

Sumrall coached Troy University of the Sunbelt Conference to back-to-back league titles in 2022 and 2023.

The Trojan's 23-4 record over those two season is exactly the same as Tulane's in Willie Fritz's last two years with the program.

Fritz announced he's leaving Tulane to coach the Houston Cougars after the Green Wave's loss to SMU in the AAC Championship game.

No stranger to Green Wave athletics, Sumrall coached the Green Wave's defense under Coach Curtis Johnson from 2012-2014.

"As Tulane football's new leader, Coach Sumrall will play a critical role in an Athletic Department that is on an unprecedented upward trajectory and under new leadership," said Michael Fitts, President of Tulane University. "The fact that we were able to attract a coach of Jon's caliber is evidence of the rising stature of our football program throughout the country."

The school will officially welcome Sumrall home with a press conference at Yulman Stadium on Monday morning at 11 o'clock. The public is invited to attend.

Tulane, ranked 23rd in the AP Top 25, will take on Virginia Tech in The Military Bowl in Annapolis, Maryland, on December 27.
