KMBZ RADIO (Wichita, KS) – The Wichita area was rolled by a 3.8 magnitude temblor this morning, according to the United State Geological Survey.
The earthquake struck at 5:04am at a depth of only three miles, a shallow depth similar to recent quakes. This latest is the 15th earthquake felt in Wichita so far this month.
However, this one is the largest of those 15 December events, surpassing a Dec. 19 earthquake of 3.7 magnitude.
It also matches the third-largest magnitude earthquake in Kansas for all of 2020, with a January shaker in Reno County registering at 4.8.
The Kansas Corporation Commission said before Christmas it does not believe the recent earthquakes are related to oil and gas activities in the area.
The KCC, which regulates oil and gas production in the state, completed an investigation after multiple earthquakes rattled Wichita in mid-December.
