Attorney General William Barr fired off the soundbite heard around the political world yesterday when he said that the Justice Department has found no evidence of widespread voter fraud that would change the outcome of the 2020 election that President Trump lost to Democrat Joe Biden.
AG Bill Barr has been one of the most loyal Trump allies in Washington, and his finding no evidence to support the President’s and his attorney’s baseless claims that the election was ripe with voter fraud attracted immediate condemnation from Trump supporters. Adding more meaning to it was the fact that leading up to the campaign Barr repeatedly talked about how mail-in voting could be easily subject to widespread fraud. But Barr has concluded that the DOJ has not found any evidence of anything fraud that would change the outcome of the 2020 election.
The public conclusion of AG Barr does not legally finalize that Trump lost; but the message of no widespread voter fraud discovered is magnified by the messenger, who has been overwhelmingly supporting Trump.
Backlash to Barr’s comments that the DOJ has uncovered no evidence to suggest the election was stolen came quickly.. Fox Business host Lou Dobbs said, “For the attorney general of the United States to make that statement - he is with a liar or a fool or both.” Dobbs continued his condemnation of Barr, suggesting that the attorney general appears “to join in with the radical Dems and the deep-state and the resistance.”
A far-right website - The Gateway Pundit - often promoted by Trump accused Barr of being “totally deaf, dumb, and blind” (but he sure plays a mean pinball) and said Barr was a “fraud.”
It should be noted how a strong ally of President Trump is condemned when he speaks what he believes to be the truth. This is more evidence that the truth is trumped by the narrative that has been created by Trump.
In Georgia, Gabriel Sterling, an election official, held a passionate press conference sounding the alarm that the insistence of widespread voter fraud has “gone too far” and that “Someone is going to get hurt, someone’s going to get shot, someone’s going to get killed, and it’s not right.”
Sterling, a Republican, pleaded with President Trump to step in and tell his supporters to stop the intimidation because it is “un-American.” Georgia citizens and their families have been threatened by those who label those involved in the election recounts treasonous.
President Trump has condemned GA Gov. Brian Kemp for not breaking the state’s constitution and overturning the election results. Trump has also called Georgia’s Republican Secretary of State, Brad Raffensperger, who is in charge of elections, an “enemy of the people.”
If we - the people - continue to accept this insanity - then we should look ourselves in the mirror and ask - “Who have we become?”
