Auto workers strike looms as union labor deal deadline nears

The United Auto Workers union remains far apart in negotiations with Detroit automakers for a new labor agreement and is preparing walkouts at select factories when contracts expire at midnight. UAW President Shawn Fain says General Motors, Ford, and Stellantis have come closer to the union’s wage-increase demands and other priorities, but he expressed doubt a deal will be reached before tonight’s deadline.

Shipping giant Maersk today presented its first container vessel moved with green methanol, a landmark moment for one of the world’s most polluting industries. The new container ship has two engines: one moved by traditional fuels and another run with green methanol — an alternative component, which uses biomass or captured carbon and hydrogen from renewable power. The new vessel emits 100 tons of carbon dioxide less per day compared to diesel-based ships.


Futures are up this morning after stocks closed mixed yesterday. The Dow Industrials lost 70, but the Nasdaq added 40 and the S&P 500 was up 5.
