There are tens of thousands of inactive offshore oil and gas wells that remain unplugged in the U.S., posing the risk of possible leaks into the ocean. According to a new study published in Nature Energy, over 14,000 inactive oil and gas wells in the Gulf 's offshore waters, inland waters and wetlands are unplugged. Researchers say plugging and abandoning these wells could prevent environmental risks but could cost more than $30 billion.
Americans have bet over $220 billion on sports with legal gambling outlets in the five years since the Supreme Court cleared the way for all 50 states to offer it. When Sunday's anniversary of the court ruling in a case brought by New Jersey arrives, two-thirds of the country will offer legal sports betting, with additional states likely to join in coming months or years.
The markets opened lower after stocks closed mixed yesterday. The Dow Industrials fell 55, but the Nasdaq added 21 and the S&P 500 edged up a point.
